About ERNA
How we live and what we eat receives greater attention today than ever before.
A heightened interest in personal health coupled with dramatic advances in science, have led to significant changes in the food market. One major development is the growing consumer demand for food supplements to enhance a healthy diet. But as consumer choice and scientific knowledge rapidly evolves, it can be tough for legislators to keep pace with the market’s changes.
The European Responsible Nutrition Alliance (ERNA) was formed to work towards a common European approach to food supplements - one that reflects the interests of both the consumers and the industry. Made up of major European food supplement manufacturers and suppliers, the alliance works with industry, consumer and regulatory bodies to tackle controversial issues.

NEW : ERNA Guidelines on the EU Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation
14 December 2012 marks a milestone in the application of the European Union’s (EU) Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation. From that date only claims that are included in a list of approved generic claims, claims which got a specific decision or regulation, and claims that have been put on hold, will be allowed on foods in the EU.

Despite the delayed establishment of this list, the application of the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation remains complex and interpretations on a number of its provisions are seen to differ between Member States.
ERNA has therefore developed a guidance document on how to apply the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation in a number of situations.
The ERNA guidance intends to provide clarity on a number of aspects to help companies apply the requirements in a correct and responsible way. It covers elements such as which claims fall within the scope of the legislation, flexibility of wording, communication to professionals and how to apply the general conditions of use for approved claims.
